The 2024 Plater-Moore Conference on Teaching and Learning was held on Friday, April 5. The conference aimed to enhance campus collaboration, ignite curiosity, and highlight educational excellence within our learning community. Welcome remarks were made by director Marie Brown of the Center for Teaching and Learning and IU Indianapolis chancellor Latha Ramchand. Along with a keynote presentation by Jeff Duncan-Andrade, there were 35 peer-reviewed concurrent sessions which disseminated best practices and innovation in teaching and learning within higher education.

Jeff Duncan-Andrade, a leading national expert in effective teaching practices and educational equity delivered the keynote. Duncan-Andrade's keynote presentation draws from 30 years of teaching and research to illuminate how teaching cultures foster wellness, confidence, and academic success among all learners. Duncan-Andrade provided insights on effective systems change, program building, and daily educational practices.

The Center for Teaching and Learning caught up with Jeff Duncan-Andrade recently to learn more about his work and research related to community-responsive pedagogy. We asked him how his work in the K-12 space translates to higher education. Specifically, are there foundational needs and feelings that all learners share? What role do individual faculty members play in fostering equitable learning environments?
About Edward C. Moore and William M. Plater
Edward C. Moore served as IUPUI’s Dean of the Faculties from 1973-1982. He was a prolific author and editor who was highly regarded by his IUPUI colleagues. William M. Plater served IUPUI’s Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 1987-2006. He was committed to excellence in teaching and learning. The Plater-Moore Conference on Teaching and Learning seeks to honor the commitment of these outstanding educator-scholars to teaching and learning in Indiana and beyond.
The conference is open to all IU faculty and instructional staff, regardless of appointment type. Professional staff who provide support for the teaching and learning mission (e.g., instructional designers, IT professionals) are also welcome to attend.
