Let's Talk Teaching:CONNECTing with Students
When: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 | 12:00 PM-01:00 PM Where: Online seminar
Presenters: Jacqueline Blackwell, School of Education, and Lynn Ward, Center for Teaching and Learning
Adobe Acrobat Connect is the tool of choice at IU for live online collaboration and presentation. But while Connect is great for collaborating in small groups (2-10 people), it can be challenging to sustain high levels of interaction and engagement in classes with 20 or more students. In this session, Professor Jacqueline Blackwell, who uses Connect regularly in her graduate early childhood education courses, will describe and demonstrate specific strategies for encouraging active participation, collaboration, and exploration of key issues within a Connect virtual meeting room. In addition, co-presenter Lynn Ward will offer some tips for setting up and managing a Connect room and provide a brief overview of features to look for in the next Connect release.
This session is part of the Let's Talk Teaching Webinar series which will focus on a variety of teaching topics. The sessions will be facilitated by faculty with an emphasis on sharing examples, discussing ideas, and exploring questions.
The series will be offered online via Adobe Connect on the second Wednesday of the month from noon to 1 pm. The sessions will be recorded and also available online after the session.

Visually Stimulated or Visually Literate?
When: Monday, September 15, 2008 | 01:00 PM-02:00 PM Where: UL 1125M
Picture-Perfect Generation - Visually Stimulated or Visually Literate?
Today's youth are visually stimulated, but hardly literate, in engaging in a vocabulary of design and the language of images. To educate and engage this new breed of learners, institutions of higher education are revisiting and revising the basic tenants of a general education by asking, What does it mean to be literate in today's visually saturated society?
Presenter: Susan Metros, Deputy CIO, Associate Vice Provost for Technology-Enhanced Learning, and Professor of Design and Clinical Education
An Educause Learning Initiative web seminar.
This event is cosponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, University College and the Gateway to Graduation Program.

Let's Talk Teaching: Effective Lecturing
When: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 | 12:00 PM-01:00 PM Where: Online seminar
Presenter: Megan Palmer, School of Medicine
Do you use lecture as one of your teaching strategies? If you do, you’re not alone. The lecture is one of the most commonly used teaching methods in higher education. Used well, it can be an effective method of transmitting information and getting students motivated to learn more about a topic. If not done well, it may just put students to sleep. This session will address the appropriate use of the lecture approach, outline various ways to engage learners during a lecture, and enable participants to identify ways they can enhance their own lectures. This web-based session will be facilitated by Megan Palmer, Director of Faculty Advancement in the Health Professions and Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Education.
This session is part of the Let's Talk Teaching webinar series which will focus on a variety of teaching topics. The sessions will be facilitated by faculty with an emphasis on sharing examples, discussing ideas, and exploring questions.

Power Up Your Pedagogy: Web 2.0 Symposium
When: Friday, October 17, 2008 | 08:30 AM-12:30 PM Where: TBA
What comes to mind when you hear the term Web 2.0? In general, the term refers to a new kind of tool that primarily uses the web as its platform. In other words, all the "action" occurs on the internet and away from your desktop. Tools that typify this concept include social networking, syndication, blogging, wikis, and tagging. Needless to say, the rise of web 2.0 is having a great impact on teaching and learning. The 2008 Power Up Your Pedagogy symposium will focus on this technology and will help you capitalize on the power of using these tools in courses. The symposium presenters have explored these tools in a variety of instructional settings and have a wealth of information to share on how to use these tools in meaningful ways. Be sure to register early, mark your calendars, and attend this year's dynamic Power Up Your Pedagogy symposium.
